Obituary of Richard Eugene Long

Richard Eugene Long, 71, passed away October 31, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. God gifted Richard to Gene and Mabel Long on May 25, 1946 in Denver, Colorado.Richard gained a love of travel and adventure through the years he grew up. He was born in Denver, Colorado, where he lived until his later elementary years. His family then moved to Puerto Rico and then to Florida. After serving in the United States Air Force, he moved back to Denver, Colorado, where he met and married Bonnie L. McMullin in July 1965. This same year, Richard started working for the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad fed Richard's passion for travel and adventure. During their twenty-six years of marriage, Richard and Bonnie raised three children; Phillip, Robyn and Nikki. They lived in multiple states (some of them more than once), including Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Texas. After retiring from the railroad, Richard continued his travel and adventures. He did a mission trip with his church to Brazil and took the Da Vinci Code Tour of Europe. He eventually settled in Colorado Springs to be near his children. Since his early life, Richard was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He was a Mason and a Shriner and actively participated in DeMolay and Job's Daughters through his children. Richard was very passionate about the railroad. He dedicated himself to safety on the job and respected and enjoyed the trains immensely. He was always looking for ways to educate his children; taking the side roads, touring the plants and farms, watching documentaries with them. One of his favorite adventures was building the cabin with Bonnie's parents. He believed that what we created as a family and what stood in the mountains was a part of each of us and contained our blood, sweat and even some tears. He had a deep love of the ocean and beach, but the mountains were his favorite place. Richard is survived by his sister, Terri Long; son, Phillip Long; two daughters, Robyn (David) Weinstein, and Nikki Dufford; and four grandchildren, Josh, Patrick, Jayden, and Brooklynne. He is preceded in death by his father, Gene Long, and his beloved mother, Mabel (Nelson) Long.Richard had a deep love for his family and faith. He appreciated everyone and gave whatever he could. He lives on through his family. Memorial Service, 1:00PM, Sunday, November 19, 2017, 3331 Saratoga Street Unit A, Wellington, Colorado 80549.
