Obituary of Clyde Avery Benson, Jr.

Clyde "Red" Benson Jr., 69, of Colorado Springs, passed away Monday, February 19, 2018, at Pikes Peak Hospice, with his family by his side. Clyde was born March 31, 1948, in Independence, Kansas, to Clyde A and Helen (Streck) Benson. The family moved to Colorado Springs when Clyde was 18 months old. During his childhood, Clyde enjoyed playing sports and excelled in baseball. He was a lifelong fan of the sport and loved to follow the Rockies. On May 16, 1970, he married Carol Buzzelli in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They had two children, Scott and Andrea. They later divorced. He married Marla Zumwalt and they were married until she passed away on February 23, 2005. He then married Anita Kroh on August 8, 2008 in South Lake, Tahoe.Clyde worked at the Gazette for 40 years, retiring in 2005. He started his career as a printer but moved into Information Technology, as new technology became part of the newspaper process. He enjoyed being with family, traveling to include a recent trip to Australia and New Zealand, driving his jeep in the mountains, watching the Broncos and spending time with his dog Mindy. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Marla.Clyde is survived by his wife, Anita Benson; son, Scott Benson; daughter, Andrea (Scott) Swanson of Colorado Springs; brother, Gary (Jacqueline) Benson of Colorado Springs; step-children, Jill (Michael Eaton) Schnathorst of Wheat Ridge; and Jana (Angie) Hayes of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Aidan and Madilyn Swanson, Oren Eaton; his former wife, Carol Benson; his dog, Mindy; and many friends.Memorial Service, 4:00PM, March 3, 2018 at The Springs Funeral Services, 3115 East Platte Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or to the Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation.
