Obituary of Mildred "Mickie" Lydia Kleager
Mildred "Mickie" L. Kleager, of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away May 11, 2018 at the young age of 95.Born in Lovell, Wyoming on August 16, 1922 to Leslie O. and Jennie (Brown) Clymer, Mickie spent the first part of her life traveling with her father and older brother Milton, now both deceased.Her mother died in the flu epidemic of 1924. After the death of her father in 1934, she and Milton settled in the Lincoln, Nebraska area with relatives.She graduated from Rokeby High School in 1940 and attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where she met Frank "Clif" Kleager. They were married April 24, 1943 shortly after Clif joined the U.S. Marine Corps as an aviator. After spending twenty-two years as a Marine, Clif retired and moved his family to Colorado Springs in 1963. Mickie then began her career as a volunteer, including twenty-four years at Ecumenical Social Ministries, seven years at the El Paso County Health Department, and fifteen years as an original soup-cooker at what is now Marian House Soup Kitchen. She won numerous awards and recognition for her community involvement, especially from Sertoma and Kiwanis clubs. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church as a deacon and one of the first female elders. Additionally, she made time for her passion of sewing, quilting and knitting, leaving behind numerous beautiful pieces.Clif and Mickie traveled through all 50 states and many foreign countries in their later years until Clif passed away in 2007. Since then she has enjoyed her grand and great-grandchildren, her numerous friends at The Inn at Garden Plaza (especially Howard Casey) and walking, walking, walking. Mickie is survived by her daughter Christine "Chris" (Paul) Nervig of Colorado Springs, two grandchildren, Nate Nervig of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Andrea (Thom) Barr of Aspen, Colorado, and three great-grandchildren - Ava, Kingsly and Blaze.
