Obituary of Duane Karl Greenwood

Duane Karl Greenwood, age 58, passed away at home in Widefield, Colorado on Saturday, May 12, 2018 following a courageous battle with cancer.Duane was born on Sunday, March 13, 1960 to Dennis Irwin and Kaye Jones Greenwood at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah.He grew up as the third of six children in Spanish Fork and American Fork, Utah; Grand Rapids, North Dakota; and spent most of his childhood and adolescent years in Pueblo, Colorado. He graduated in 1978 from Centennial High School in Pueblo, Colorado where he lettered in football.Duane served as a full-time missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Italy Catania Mission, from October 1979 to October 1981. He served in the towns of Siracusa, Catania, Palermo, Trapani, and Brindisi.Duane married Cynthia Lou "Cynde" Reichenbach on Tuesday, December 29, 1981 in the Washington DC Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Duane graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering with emphasis in structural and geotechnical engineering.Duane's community service included membership in the Optimist International clubs of Oroville, California; and Marshalltown, Iowa.Duane most recently served 9.75 years as Public Works Director/City Engineer for Fountain, Colorado. His professional career included engineering positions with Merrill, Seeley, Mullen, Sandefur, Inc. of Pleasanton, California; McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Corporation of Long Beach, California; Orange County Environmental Management Agency Transportation Division of Santa Ana, California; and City of Riverside (California) Public Works Department. He also served as Public Works Director/City Engineer for the cities of Arcata, California; Oroville, California; and Marshalltown, Iowa. He was an active, licensed professional engineer in the states of California, Iowa, and Colorado. He also held membership in the American Society of Civil Engineers.Duane served faithfully in many volunteer positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his adult life, including callings as Full-Time Missionary, Primary Nursery Leader, Primary Teacher, Ward Clerk, Elders Quorum Counselor, Young Men President, Ward Mission Leader, Bishopric Counselor, High Priests Group Secretary, High Priests Group Leader, and Denver Colorado Temple Ordinance Worker.Duane served the Boy Scouts of America in numerous roles over the years including Pack Committee Member, Pack Committee Chairman, Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, Troop Committee Member, Team Committee Member, and Chartered Organization Representative. This service was primarily provided in California and Iowa. He was inducted into Cahuilla Lodge #127 (California) and became a full Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.Duane's hobbies included camping, fishing, gardening, and house remodeling.Duane was preceded in death by his father, Dennis. He was survived by Cynde, his wife of 36 years; one daughter, Eileen (Dan) Ackermann of Utah; two sons, Karl (Rebecca) Greenwood of Utah, and Richard (LaDawn) Greenwood of Colorado; six grandchildren; his mother, Kaye Baxter; three sisters, Debi (Jeff) Einfeldt of Utah, DeAnn (Mike) Fipps of Colorado; and DeVon (Nathan) Millet of Colorado; two brothers, Dennis (Janice) Greenwood of Utah, and Darrin (Bernadette) Greenwood of Colorado.The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff/nurses/technicians/assistants/doctors at Rocky Mountain Cancer Center, Penrose Hospital, and Pikes Peak Hospice of Colorado Springs for their considerate expert professional care of Duane.Duane elected to be directly cremated by The Springs Funeral Services and as such there will be no viewings.
