Obituary of Mike Hopkins
Marvin M. (Mike) Hopkins, a Colorado resident since 1973, passed from this life into the waiting arms of his Savior on Mother's Day, 13 May 2018. Mike was born September 6, 1952, in Belleville, Illinois to Marvin H. and Lucille C. Hopkins who preceded him in death. He is survived by three brothers, David (JoAnn), Douglas (Cindy), Steven (Cheryl); four sons; John, Joseph, Michael, and Joshua, daughter; Dallas, three nieces; Cienna, Grace, and Annalise Hopkins, and two nephews, Jacob and Matthew Hopkins.Mike was a self-taught master carpenter and contractor, with many dwellings and buildings throughout the Pikes Peak region. On April 3, 1981 he suffered a traumatic brain injury from a three-story fall at a construction site. As a result, his speech, eyesight, balance, and motor control were severely compromised. Through it all, Mike's faith and sense of humor remained intact. As a testament to his will to live and encouragement to others, Mike scaled Pikes Peak on more than twenty occasions. Heartfelt thanks to so many with the strong backs who assisted Mike in those ascents. They were cherished accomplishments. It was his brother, Steve, who for over twenty years until state-sponsored care was mandated, carried Mike through life's most difficult challenges and darkest days. Greater love hath no man...After his fall, Mike found solace and a sense of purpose in writing letters. Prolific, insightful-though at times divisive-these narratives, for good or ill, became his identity.Even when confronted with debilitating physical conditions, conditions that pharmaceuticals could not relieve and would ultimately take his life, Mike looked to a future hope that neither pain nor darkness could diminish.Towards the end, Mike became less self-aware, more tender, and more concerned about the welfare of others. At the end, he just wanted to be free from the infirmities that were his constant companions for 37 years, and the burden he placed on others. In his final moments, beyond reach of those who loved him most, Christ met him at his point of greatest need his faith became sight when Jesus welcomed him home. In the end, that's all that matters.Memorial Service, 4:00PM, May 25, 2018, The Springs Funeral Services, 3115 East Platte Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80909.
