Obituary of Val D. Weenig

Val Weenig, 77, passed away on June 11, 2018. He was born May 19, 1941 in Ogden, Utah to Harry Nephi and Evelyn Thompson Weenig. He was the sixth of eight children with five brothers and two sisters. His father was a butcher and grocer who owned two stores in Ogden and one store in Boise, Idaho. The family moved from Ogden to Boise during Val's secondary education.He enjoyed playing football, basketball and track. He graduated from Borah High School in 1959 and attended BYU-Provo on a full-ride football scholarship. He played four years of football as a tackle and lineman, typically playing the full 60 minutes. He earned many athletic and academic awards including the A. Smith Pond award in 1963. After playing his four football seasons, he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central States Mission. After returning from his two-year mission, he finished his last semester of school and graduated from BYU with a BS in Zoology with a pre-med minor.He met his sweetheart, Patty McCurdy, at a mission reunion. After a short courtship, they were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple September 4, 1968. Val attended dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. After graduating in 1972, he moved his family to Colorado Springs, Colorado and established his dental practice there for over thirty years. He was innovative in his dental practice, offering dental implants and obtaining the first dental laser in Colorado Springs in the 1980's. He was active in continuing his professional education and training by attending countless dental seminars and conventions. He often would use his hand puppet, Donald Duck, and mimic Donald's voice to help children feel at ease during their dental visits. He was loved by his patients and he took great care and pride in his dentistry. Val was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served willingly and happily in any position he was asked to serve in. Many years were devoted to serving in bishoprics and branch presidencies, as scout master, gospel doctrine teacher, and family history consultant. He served, along with his wife, a three-year assignment as family history consultants. Together they served patrons who needed assistance using FamilySearch.org. He loved genealogy and was actively working on connecting parents and children in his family tree.Val was a committed and supportive husband, father and grandfather.Val was a good son and honored his parents. He truly enjoyed providing for his family, both temporally and in other important ways.� Family trips and fun times skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado are among his children's cherished memories.�He loved teaching, and was good at it.� Lessons he skillfully and patiently taught his family will be long-remembered.��He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Jason Thomas Weenig; his parents; two sisters; four brothers; and his mother and father-in-law, Lucille and Wesley McCurdy.Val is survived by his wife, Patty McCurdy Weenig; and their children, Valicia (Lyle) Fuller of Franklin, Idaho, Jessica (Cyril) Collyer of Portland, Oregon, Jamie (Logan) Schoonmaker Colorado Springs, Colorado, Joshua (Aimee) Weenig of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Kassandra (Kirk) Nelson of Bremerton, Washington; and his brother, Clair (Joan) Weenig.
