Obituary of David "Dave" William Rudy

Dave Rudy was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on March 10, 1947. He died peacefully at his home in Colorado Springs on Sunday, September 16, 2018 after a nine month long, hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. "...away from the body and at home with the Lord." 2 Corinthians 5:8 His unwavering focus throughout this trial was that his affliction might be used by God to build up and encourage the body of Christ. He leaves behind Carole, his wife of 38 years; five adult children, Abe (Jen) Friedman, Heather Rudy, Megan (Matt) Cook, twins Patrick (Stacie) Rudy & Christopher Rudy; his brother, Steve (Robin) Rudy; ten grandchildren, ranging in age from 18 months to 16 years; many other beloved family members and countless friends and colleagues.Dave attended Oberlin College, graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University with a B.A. in Political Science, the University of Chicago with a Masters of Philosophy, and received a J.D. magna cum laude from University of San Francisco School of Law, where he served as an adjunct professor for 18 years. He was an accomplished trial lawyer, mediator, professor of law, public speaker, writer, life-long learner, avid story teller, mentor, friend, pilot, sailor, race car fan, musician, photographer, collector of fountain pens and woodturners. During the 80s, Dave and Carole enjoyed extensive travel to Europe and the Hawaiian Islands. They discovered a love of sailboat racing in the Bay Area. They joined the San Francisco Yacht Club, where some of their best memories were made during summer regattas, trips up the Delta to Tinsley Island, celebratory dinners and the annual Father-Daughter dance. 1990 marked the most significant turning point in Dave's life when he came to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In Dave's own words, from an interview published in the monthly newspaper of the First Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, California, "After coming to Christ, I was touched beyond words to discover that each step of my journey was surrounded by prayer...I thank God for his grace in opening my eyes to the truth and for the tangible reality of answered prayer." It was Dave's prayer that Christ be magnified in his journey with cancer, as he praised God for allowing him to testify to His goodness amid earthly pain and suffering. During his nearly 30-year career as a Mediator and Arbitrator, Dave earned incredible respect of both his mediator colleagues and his clients. He often found that patience and empathy on his part meant the difference between success and failure. He was legendary for his commitment to keeping the negotiation alive even if the matter could not be settled in the first session. He thoroughly enjoyed the art of mediation and it gave him great satisfaction to assist people in resolving disputes outside of the court system. He made many life-long connections and friendships with people on both sides of the "aisle." His loves were Jesus Christ, his family, his brothers and sisters in Christ, watching the sun sink into the ocean in Hawaii, exploring the world with Carole, a robust conversation about theology over a cup of coffee, hummingbirds and his dog, Rawli. Dave's family and friends will sorely miss the passion with which he lived life and his ability to add levity to any situation. Dave loved to dig deep into the Word of God. His excitement about a nugget of truth discovered and the passionate discussion that ensued is one of the things that Carole will miss most. The silence will be deafening.Funeral Service, 1:00PM, Saturday, September 22, 2018, Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church, 4450 Westmeadow Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906Private interment, Fairview Cemetery, Colorado Springs, Colorado.Contributions in Dave's memory can be made to Puritan Research Center at the Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, https://prts.edu/donate/overview/ Events Funeral Service Saturday, September 22, 2018 1:00PM Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church 4450 Westmeadow Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80906 Phone: 719-328-1793 Final Resting Place Fairview Cemetery 1000 S. 26th Street Colorado Springs, CO 80904
