Obituary of Terrence "Terry" William Haverluk
Terrence W. Haverluk, 60, died September 18, 2018, in Colorado Springs, CO. He was born September 12, 1958, in Gillette, Wyoming. Terry was an athlete throughout high school, excelling in both wrestling and baseball. He attended the University of Northern Colorado for his undergraduate degree in geography and made lifelong friends as a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, Epsilon Pi Chapter. Terry worked as a roughneck on the oil rigs in Weld County, Colorado to pay for school. After travelling throughout Europe and Mexico, he enrolled in the Geography Department at the University of Minnesota, where he earned his MA in 1987 and PhD in 1993. Terry was a Professor in the Geospatial Science Program at the United States Air Force Academy and published numerous influential research articles on Hispanic migration patterns in the U.S. He was well-known among faculty and cadets for his "Chile Pepper" lecture and frequently received standing ovations from cadets as he walked into the classroom. In recent years, Terry turned to geopolitics, publishing the textbook Geopolitics from the Ground Up and teaching the topic in the Scholars Program at USAFA, and occasionally at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak Community College. Terry was an engaging and entertaining lecturer, bringing awareness and enjoyment of his subject matter to both his students and members of the community. He was particularly proud of having coined the terms "hispanization" and "cryopolitics".Anybody who knew Terry can attest that he was a jovial, fun-loving, and enthusiastic person. He loved to cook and travel, and was proficient in both Spanish and French. Terry enjoyed sports, particularly playing golf and watching Broncos football with family and friends.Terry had been in poor health for nearly a decade, suffering from various ailments, but all related to his underlying struggles with alcohol. Terry celebrated his 60th birthday the weekend before his death by hosting a pig roast at his home that was attended by friends and family from all over the country. The celebration gave Terry great joy and will be a lasting memory for all those who attended. Terry is survived by his wife Julie, his daughters Elena and Claire, and his sisters Valerie (Will) Knorr and Lisa Haverluk.Memorial contributions in honor of Terry can be made to KRCC.org, our local National Public Radio station so important in keeping Terry entertained and abreast of the current events so integral to his teaching.Memorial Gathering, 1:00PM-3:30PM, Saturday, October 20, 2018, Black Forest Community Club, 12530 Black Forest Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80908.
