Obituary of Katherine Barzilla Chambon

Katherine Barzilla (Kitchen) Chambon, also known as Bardie to her family, was born on September 14, 1930 to Albert Harrison Kitchen and Rachel Vineyard Kitchen in Pascola, Missouri. She was the seventh of eight children. When she was six years old the family moved to Colorado Springs, and she started first grade at Lowell Elementary School. She also attended Columbia School, North Junior High and Colorado Springs High School. At age 14 she met the love of her life, Glenn Joseph Chambon, in an accident at the roller-skating rink when he accidentally knocked her down. After she forgave him a couple weeks later, they became very close friends and eventually after several years, and on July 19 1947 they were married. They celebrated their 64th anniversary in 2011, a month before Glenn passed away. As long as she could, she enjoyed roller skating at the church skating parties. (Glenn's skating improved.)Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Aaron, Dawsey, and Marion; and three sisters: Dorothy Henderson, Bernedine Toy, and Arbutus Stephenson; her son, Barton Clark Chambon, and granddaughter Cindy Jo Chambon. She is survived by her sister, Joyce Platschorre of Colorado Springs; three children, Glynn Kay Chambon (Sid) Runyan, Dennis Joseph (Robin) Chambon , and Nancy Annette Chambon (Dave) Moulton; seven grandchildren, Jennica Hein (Russ) Jenkins, Brad Hein, Wendy (Colby) Foos, Dennis (Mischelle) Chambon Jr., Star Chambon, Jax Chambon and Jillian Brewer; eleven great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Colorado Springs from the age of ten making her the oldest living member (78 years) until her passing this week. She was a faithful Christian lady who was very active at the church in her younger days and made sure all of her kids knew the Lord. She was a Sunday School teacher of the two and three-year old class, some of which are still connected with the church today. She was in charge of preparing large church dinners for special occasions, was a member of the ladies' circle group, and the Christian Workers and Home Builders Sunday School Class. For years she walked door to door for the American Heart Association and supported many other worthwhile causes. She loved to bowl and played on leagues every week winning many trophies and traveled to other states to compete with her team. She also enjoyed vacations and trips with her husband and the family. She and Glenn worked at Surplus City for many years and they then opened Glenn's Army Store. They took many fun trips to Las Vegas to the surplus trade shows. The family went to nearly every national park west of the Mississippi. Every summer on Dad's vacation we went somewhere far away and mostly camped out. Mom was a good sport and cooked fish and fish and fish. She loved camp cooking. We went to Disneyland and had many fun trips. Katherine truly enjoyed her trip to New York and Hawaii on their 50th anniversary.Katherine was a hard worker and kept her home in top shape as long as she was able to live at home. Her home was warm, clean, cheerful and beautiful. She loved decorating for Christmas. When we were kids, the house had hardwood floors that shined like glass, and the lights from the Christmas tree reflected on that shiny floor...such a warm memory. She loved to sing. Her favorite Christmas carol was "Away in a Manger". We always enjoyed the big Christmas Eve family parties. She was traditional and loved Christmas. She remembered all the words from the songs of the '40s and sang them to us...many of them were funny and we would enjoy sitting around when Daddy would have her sing them to us. She had a good sense of humor. She was an excellent cook and we never, ever missed a meal except the one when were out fishing one day and the car broke down...and we were late having lunch that day. Her roast beef and noodles were top notch and her enchiladas were something we looked forward to.She loved us and her actions proved it in a million ways. She loved her husband with all her heart and gave her children much love and security in that. She was the personification of Proverbs 31.Katherine was a godly woman, a treasure, a shining light.Visitation, 10:00AM, Friday, December 28, 2018, First Baptist Church, 317 East Kiowa Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80903.
