Obituary of William "Bill" Donald Poynor

William D. "Bill" Poynor passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018. Bill was a loving husband, father and grandfather, whose kindness, wisdom and generosity touched the lives of his family and those who knew him. Bill was born June 23, 1931 in Weatherford, Texas, the eldest of three children born to John Winfred Poynor and Nellie Jimerson Bounds. From the time he was a kid, he had an interest in show business and worked as an usher at a local theater. While first attending Texas Christian University, he enjoyed performing with a college friend in a duet act. He eventually pursued a major in his favorite subject, geology, a stimulating career that surpassed his love for musical theater.While working for Texaco on different floors, Bill and a lovely girl, Nancy White, finally met on the same bowling team. They fell in love and married in 1955. The couple ventured to California, where Bill continued his major and graduated from UCLA, receiving a B.A. in Geology in 1957 and an M.A. in Geology in 1960. He began his geology career and continued to enjoy little theater on the side. He served thirteen years for Atlantic Richfield Corporation, which eventually brought his family to Houston. In 1973, he went to Anadarko Petroleum Company for a decade, where he spearheaded a premier offshore division from its inception. From 1983 to 1996, he served in an executive capacity for companies including Mesa Petroleum Corporation, Hunt Oil Company, Sandefer Offshore Company and Midcon Offshore. A thirty-nine year veteran in the petroleum exploration and production industry, the Offshore Gulf of Mexico was his principal focus, and other areas of expertise included Gulf Coast Onshore, California, Alaska and the Rocky Mountains. Bill was a Godly family man whose wife and three children cherish their memories with him. He continued singing, mainly for weddings and church solos. He took his family on trips exploring the country and vacationed often in Colorado, both in summer and in winter for skiing, which he loved. He and Nancy eventually left Houston, where they lived more than forty years, and moved to Colorado. Bill was preceded in death by his third son, Timothy Winfred; and brother, Tom Poynor. He leaves behind family including his loving wife of sixty-three years, Nancy; his children and their spouses, Mark and Laurie Poynor, Linda and Randy Watson, and David and Chris Poynor; grandchildren, Austin, LeeAnn, Tyler, Ryan, Savannah, Ashley, Kaden and Ellie; his siblings and their spouses, Patricia Witt, Gene Poynor, Marvin and Elizabeth Poynor, and Mary and Barry Tatum; as well as treasured nieces, nephews and friends.
