Obituary of Dr. Phillip J. Swihart

Dr. Phillip J. Swihart, 77, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Linda; his son, Josh (Melody); his daughters, Amanda and Lauren; and grandchildren Jakub, Gavin, and Shane; his brother, Judson (Nancy) Swihart; and sister, Anita (Paul) Hedges.Born and raised in Goshen, Indiana to Noble J. and Marjorie Catherine (Walters) Swihart, Phillip attended Purdue University where he received a B.S. and PhD. in clinical psychology. He also received an M.A. degree through UCLA.After meeting and marrying his wife Linda in Goshen Indiana, the couple moved to California and later, Colorado. Phillip dedicated his life and work to the care and counseling of others. Maintaining a private practice throughout his career, he also took on a variety of roles in the field of mental health. During his time as part of the faculty at California State University Northridge, he also directed the counseling center of his church in Van Nuys, California where he led various missions trips overseas. Following a move to Montrose, Colorado, Phillip became the director of the Montrose Mental Health Center. He later served as the director of the Ray Foundation and Tango Corporation in Denver, United Way in Boulder, as well as an administrator at the Pikes Peak Mental Health Center in Colorado Springs. He ended his career as the head of the counseling department at Focus on the Family. Phil had many passions. Most of them included his appreciation for the Rocky Mountains. Phil enjoyed hiking and traversing narrow mountain roads. He would often visit small mountain towns in order to look for antiques with his father. Phil loved road trips. He would stop at his favorite truck stops and mingle with the diverse locals. He was also a voracious reader and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He took great pleasure in spending time with family and attending his family reunions.
