On behalf of the Center for Character and Leadership Development, we wish to take this time to remember a man who contributed his life's work to service and support of the U.S. Air Force, the Academy, and generations of our cadets. Col (ret) Walter Miller dedicated his life to the long blue line - training thousands of cadets in his time as an Academy Soaring Program instructor. Through Walter's dedication to family and Nation, his own sons followed in his footsteps, becoming leaders of character as general officers who today continue his legacy at the Academy. We extended our heartfelt condolences to Walter's wife, Charlotte, his three children Chris, Heather, and Evan, and his grandchildren. Off we go into the wild blue yonder… Col Anarumo & the CCLD Team

Wally was one of a kind. He sharpened my flying skills by being a constant and wonderful nag. What I remember most was him hectoring me to fly a perfect ILS. Afterword he said "see you can fly as good as you want to fly". I hear his voice in my headset, still. Wally was so good he made everybody else look mediocre, which we probably are. Take care my friend and watch your six and do one more roll for all of us! Jack Brush

Unlike my classmate Curt, I came to know Wally later in life, in the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs in the mid-90s. Also, when I began flying again in 2004, Wally was my instructor pilot He was a superb instructor, great Rotarian and very good man. He exemplified kindness and humility. He was a brilliant aviator who could take complex topics (like mountain flying in a general aviation aircraft) and make them very understandable, even for a guy from KY like me. His combat aviation experience in Vietnam was an example to everyone who ever aspired to be a combat aviator. Most importantly, he adored his wife and children, and showed it in all he said and did. I want to be the man, the husband and the father that Wally Miller was. I will greatly miss you, my friend. See you in Heaven. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfFoZAmaOTY

When I first met Walter I was only 14 years old. His son, Chris, and I were buddies in the same Boy Scout troop. Walter was unfailingly gentle and kind, and whenever we talked he gave me his full attention--as if I was the adult we both knew I had not yet become. Over the 48 years since then, he and Charlotte have always blessed me with their warmth, encouragement and love. I know he's enjoying trying out his new set of wings. Well-earned, sir! -- Curt Bedke, family friend and admirer

Ted Beckett: I loved Col. Wally, met him in Rotary in 1999. He was a year older but gave me respect as an enlisted USMC Korean vet. I was doing a project that involved Israeli's and Palestinians, in the Middle East. I tried to get a Rotary Club started in Ramallah, to no avail until I recruited Wally. In his direct style he went right to the RI International board, got one of the VP's on board and June 1st 2010, the RI President himself inaugurated the 1st Palestinian Rotay club. He was a great man with great drive. We miss him.
