Obituary of Donald Robert Wright

Donald Robert Wright, age 71, passed away on August 21, 2019 in Colorado Springs. He was surrounded by his loved ones and family. He was born July 29, 1948 in Fargo, North Dakota to Bernard and Lola Mae (Blow) Wright. Donald graduated from Villa Park High School, class of 1967 in California. He worked for the City of California and then his adoration for nature and the mountains brought him to Colorado. In the 1970's Don worked as a Transportation Operator for the City of Colorado Springs Department of Transportation, which he loved doing until the day he retired. On October 13, 2013 he married the love of his life, Patricia Wright. They taught everyone around them the power and importance of love, respect and friendship.Knowing Don, you knew he loved performing numerous activities outside; valuing the wonders of nature. He had a talent for finding the most innocent and remarkable parts of nature and the animals that surrounded it. You knew you would find him out feeding the squirrels, chipmunks and his hummingbirds. The way he approached nature made you think a bear would come up to him and gently eat out of his hand; animals understood him as much as he understood them. He loved fishing, boating, camping, painting, playing his guitar, and spending time with his dogs who he adored. Don cherished being Santa around the Holidays; seeing his young grandchildren smile when they saw that red hat and long white beard. There wasn't much he didn't enjoy doing while with his family and friends. He was very avid about bringing the family together to enjoy picnics and BBQ's. He never missed a birthday, holiday, or important milestone in his loved one's life. Speaking with family and his closest friends about his most unforgettable attribute; they agreed it was his daring smile. Don had one of those smiles that when you saw him you just had to smile back. Seeing the glow of his smile, you knew he was happy and full of life. His ecstatic and positive personality was infectious and he was enthusiastic about keeping those around him smiling as well. Don had the best of stories to tell and every time he started you knew you were in for a treat. He was full of facts and logic and stories of the past. Some stories made you want to hear more just because and others made you fall to ground laughing so hard you could barely stand up. We all loved listening to him; just watching him deep in thought with his ambition, laughter, and of course a wicked smile on his face. He was full of encouragement and we knew he supported us no matter what. He wanted to push those he loved to be the best version of themselves and he lived his life doing so as a great example. Don was an outgoing, go-getter, and strong husband, father, grandparent, friend and neighbor. Knowing and being a part of Don's life is an honor. He made an example of the person we all want to be and a reminder that those who surround you with love are the most important part of life. Don is survived by his wife, Patricia Wright; daughters, Tammy (Shawn) Ferguson and Carolyn "Chimen" Wright (Roy) LaFollette; grandchildren, Michael Don (Ashley) Ferguson, Christopher Shawn Ferguson, Austin Blake Ferguson, Tristan Brandon Ferguson, Ashley Rayelle (Cameron) McDonald, Mariah Rose (Wesley) LaFollette, Brooke McKenzie LaFollette, Madison Grace LaFollette, Alexandria May LaFollette Lescalleet, Savanah Nikole LaFollette Thornal; great-grandchildren, Paisley Vada Ferguson, Hayden Alma Ferguson, Nevaeh Lee Ferguson; brothers, Norman (Frankie) Wright and Billy Wright.Don Robert Wright is very much loved and will be very much missed.Memorial Service, 2:00PM-5:00PM, Sunday, September 1, 2019, Fox Run Regional Park, Oak Meadows #2 Pavilion, 2110 Stella Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80921.
