Obituary of Sung Hee Duncan

Mrs. Sung Hee Duncan (ne Kye Su So), of Colorado Springs, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at the age of 82, from liver cancer.Sung was born to parents Op Tong So and Pun Nyo Kim on May 11, 1937 in Chonbuk-do, South Korea. She grew up the eldest of four, surviving the Japanese Occupation and the Korean War. After the war, Sung put aside her dream of becoming a nurse and, in 1969, she married her sweetheart, Stanton Duncan, in Seoul, South Korea. The marriage was performed at the U.S. Embassy and registered at Seoul City Hall. Sung and Stan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary earlier this year.In 1969, the couple moved to North Carolina near Fort Bragg, where Stan was stationed as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. There, Sung learned to drive, but, at 4 feet, 11 inches tall, she had a hard time finding a car that would allow her to reach the pedals. She finally settled on a Gremlin, which would probably be a collector's item today if she had held on to it. Stan, who was six feet tall at the time, still thinks fondly of that car. That might be the definition of true love: buying a car that you have to squeeze into so your tiny wife can reach the pedals.Sung and Stan had two children, Susan and Patti. In the late 1970s, the family relocated to Colorado Springs for Stan's transfer to Fort Carson. After her daughters left home for college in the late 1980s, Sung owned a beauty salon for several years called the Lady Barber. She greatly enjoyed cutting and styling hair, meeting new people, and being her own boss. Sung especially delighted in giving perms to her older daughter and her daughter's friends. After she retired, she and her husband traveled and visited with friends and family in the United States and South Korea. Sung was an expert vegetable gardener and her family benefited from her green thumb. Behind every house she lived in, she spent many hours tending to an extensive garden filled with squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, and other vegetables, which she turned into traditional Korean and American dishes. She is preceded in death by her parents, Op Tong and Pun Nyo; and her sister, Myong Cha.Sung is survived by her husband, Stan; her daughters, Susan Park and Patti Duncan; her sister, Kye Sik and her brother, Chae Ok, both of Seoul, South Korea; and grandchildren Beatrice, Chance, and Charlotte.
