Obituary of W. Lee Baker
W. Lee Baker, 93, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2019 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born on November 17, 1925 to Walter D. and Winifred (Moore) Baker in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Lee attended Colorado Springs area schools and graduated from Colorado Springs High School (now known as Palmer High School) in 1943. After high school, Lee went onto study at Colorado University and Colorado College where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. While in college, Lee met the love of his life, D. Jeanne Ellinwood. Lee and Jeanne were married on June 22, 1947. They had two daughters, Janet and Sandra. Lee became a salesman for his family's company, Baker Realty Company, in 1948 and eventually would go on to become the Vice President. Baker Realty Company was founded in 1925 by Lee's father and was one of the very first Real Estate companies in Colorado Springs. Lee worked as a Realtor and Real Estate Broker for almost forty years before retiring in 1987. Lee served as a past president of the YMCA, Pikes Peak Sertoma Club, Colorado Springs Board of Realtors, Southern Colorado Chapter of IREM and Colorado Springs Country Club. He earned many awards as Manager of the Year and Realtor of the Year over the course of his career.Following his retirement, Lee spent his winters in Sun City West, Arizona and his summers in Colorado Springs. Lee was an avid golfer and was proud of his seven Hole-In-Ones that he shot over the years. He also loved his monthly poker games, dancing with his wife, and driving his antique cars. Lee and Jeanne loved to travel and take their entire family on vacation. Lee and Jeanne celebrated fifty-nine years of marriage before she passed away in July 2006.Lee connected with an old friend and widow, Bettie Burgess, and was able to spend his final years with her at his home in Arizona and in Colorado Springs. They enjoyed spoiling his nine great-grandchildren and dining out. Bettie passed away in October 2018.Lee was a wonderful man who loved his family and was joyful and generous. Friends and family loved his witty charm and sense of humor. He was dearly loved and will be missed.Lee is survived by his daughters, Janet (Mike) Biernacki and Sandy (Brian) Hanson; four granddaughters, Aimee (James) Daugherty, Heather (Jamie) Trujillo, Annie (Jon) Patton and Elisabeth (Chris) Grimsley; and nine great-grandchildren: Ryan, Karlee, Adam, Andrew, Bella, Lillie, Rhett, Abbe and Maggie.Celebration of Life, 2:00PM, Saturday, November 23, 2019, The Springs Funeral Services - North, 6575 Oakwood Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80923.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lee's memory can be made to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.
