It was a Sunday night in Jamaica and we were getting ready to go home after having spent the day at a nearby beach and playing with Dom at my sister's house. Dom was an adorable toddler, not quite a year and a half, and he was begging his parents that he wanted to go with us to continue playing, I suppose. We tried to talk him out of it, telling him he'll miss his Mommy and Daddy, but he insisted. And since we couldn't refuse our precious little nephew, Dom happily jumped in the car. Then the inevitable happened ... he wanted to go home and started crying for his Mommy. It was after midnight and no one was going to take him back no matter how adorable he was. Nothing could keep him quiet except the bogeyman. Knock, knock ... "That's the bogeyman. Shhh, he'll hear you if you don't go to sleep." Worked like a charm. We lived right next door to a small, private elementary school so when my brothers and sisters were getting ready for school, Dom naturally wanted to follow them. It was then we realized that Dom came only with the clothes he was wearing (brief and tank top) and no shoes! He stood by the wooden gate trying to get out as he listened to the kids laughing and playing during recess but we really couldn't allow him to go. It was lunchtime and as I approached the school to take my siblings home for lunch, I thought I could hear Dom's little voice but it couldn't be. Then I heard children shouting, "Dominic, Dominic, catch me nuh!" "Dominic, see the ball there. Kick it!" And there he was, our adorable, little nephew running around, laughing and having the time of his life, barefoot and all!
