We did not know Larry as a portrait artist. We knew him as he created his portrait for his Lord. As he loved his wife, his children, grandchildren and extended family. We were members of the same Sunday School class for ten years. During that time Larry was a faithful attender and contributor. He and Judy extended hospitality often to the class for fun evenings of games and fellowship. His portrait with guidance from the Holy Spirit was well prepared and ready for the day he met his Lord. I first met Larry in kindergarten at Beals Grade School and became good friends with him and his brother Terry through grade & high school besides being in bible classes with them at Central United Presbyterian Church. They lived just 7 blocks from me which made it convenient to do lots of stuff together - Cub, Boy, Explorer Scouts including many camp outs, even winter camps [I remember watching frozen eggs melt as we fried them]. Behind my home was a chicken shed that we [several neighborhood kids, Larry & Terry plus] converted to a model airplane factory where we built balsa wood models for several summers. Unfortunately I was into mail-order fireworks and I think most of the models ended up being exploded on their 2nd or 3rd flight. My home had been a farm house and there was still vacant farm land on two sides where we spent many happy hours digging trenches in a sumac forest [small grove] playing soldier [WWII]. One of my fondest memories with Larry was spending a 10 day road trip with 3 others in a 1941 Chevy Coup from Boulder Colorado up to Yellowstone National park where we camped and saw 30 bears - I think Larry woke up one morning with a grizzley sniffing around our camp site - banging on cookware scared him off. On the way we camped out near Jenny Lake in the Teton National Park with Mt Teewinot right on the other side of the lake - it looked like it would be so easy to climb so we tried it. It has many false summits though - I can remember Larry & I getting to what we thought was the top only to discover there was another higher "top" on the other side. After going down and up several summits I think we did finally reach the top. My memory could be vague about this - but at least now I know Larry has made it to the "top".

I first met Larry at a figure drawing group session at Cottonwood, probably at least eight years ago, where he religiously attended the Friday morning long pose and I was the model. I always admired his work, his humility, and his drive to improve. He always said he "couldn't get my nose right"... but I think in actuality he understood that every piece he created was perfect just the way it is and just the way it isn't. We'll miss you Larry!

Larry was one of the better artist in weekly portrait art group meeting at the Senior Center. He would travel around the room looking at the other artist painting and with humor advise us that we needed to use more "red". Well miss him and his great art and sense of humor.

Hal Hildebrand I knew Larry through the arts. I first met Larry Cottonwood Art Academy taking lessons from Sparky LaBold. Then we were together at Victor Celebrates the Arts painting for a week in Victor Colorado. Then when I joined the portrait drawing group at the senior center, there was Larry. Larry was a fun person to be around, and everybody enjoyed his sense of humor. If you have ever watched Cheer's, you know that when Norm Petterson walked into the bar, everyone would yell Norm. Well, a similar thing happened at portrait drawing when Larry would get there, usually late, we all would say Larry. I looked forward to seeing him each week and will miss him greatly. Here is a photo of a pastel portrait I bought from Larry.

Larry was such an amazing man-talented, funny, intelligent and kind; I always looked forward to seeing what he would come up with next that would put a smile on everyone's face. This photo is of him accepting the "You See So Good" award at my annual paintout. I love you, Larry.

In our Friday figure drawing, I always admired how Larry could capture the essence of the model and enliven the face with wonderful highlights. He and I actually attended the same high school, though some years apart, and had memories of our former school principal. He'll be sorely missed, though I think he'll be there in spirit. Marjorie

My two favorite memories of my brother-in-law Larry took place years apart. The first was when our family was building my parent's retirement home in Buena Vista in 1973 and the Swansons came to lend a hand for the summer. Larry always wore a hat and wore his (remaining) hair pretty shaggy & had his big muttonchop sideburns. The contractor on the job just about fell off the roof when, after several days of work, he saw Larry take off his hat & he was completely bald on top! The second memory is of all the holidays Larry & Judy came to share Thanksgiving or Christmas with our family in Buena Vista before cancer made it too difficult. Enjoying hugs, story-reading, & laughter with our grand-children when theirs were so far away. I hope our 3 grand-daughters can remember all the love their great-uncle & aunt shared with them. We'll all miss Larry's great smile, laugh, caricatures, & turkey carving (snitching)!

Larry had such a great smile! He would grin at me and give me a hug as we passed in the doorway of our exercise classes at the Y. My special experience was when he talked me into modeling for the portrait class at the Senior Center. I was embarrassed and not terribly comfortable with how the various artists would portray me. But he persisted and it was fun. His was the portrait I truely admired and felt looked most like me. The next time I saw the drawing, it was framed and for sale in his studio. It didn't seem right to have it go to someone else's home. He offered me "a special deal" and it hangs in a place of honor in our home. It will always remind me of his warm friendship.

The last time I saw Larry was at our figure drawing group session a few weeks ago. He was doing his usual excellent work. He had a way of catching the essence of a person that we all admired. The depth of feeling that radiated from his paintings, reflected the depth of his soul. It's how I want to remember him. He was beloved by us all. We will miss him.

Gunnar Hyltén-Cavallius I am one of Larry´s Swedish cousins on his father Phil´s side (we are now three still alive, Leif Gustafsson, Birgitta Strandh and myself). Way back in 1957 Larry visited Sweden, while participating in a Christian youth meeting in Finland. I - 8 years old at that time - remember him playing tricks with his body (pretending to cut off the under arm, "sawing off" the bend of the arm; knocking on top of the head, making an echoing sound). Larry also taught the young boy to say "I love you" in Finnish and German…). We also met as grown ups during my two visits to the US in 1971 and 1991 - many good memories and fun. Larry and Judy also came to our country twice, I think. During the last visit to our old farm, Hålegården, he painted my wife Gudrun´s and my portraits. We send our dearest thoughts and pray to the Lord, that He may give all the family consolation and strength for each day. R.I.P.

Ron Gallegos got some great photos of the artist gatherings he and Willa would host at their house whenever Sarah and I would come back to visit Colorado Springs. So much fun to catch up with everyone at those cookouts. And like I said on Facebook, I'll always remember the weekly lunches that Larry, Mike Baum, Ron Gallegos and I (sometimes others as well) would share at La Casita after life drawing sessions at Cottonwood. We loved talking art together.

Friday, January 10, 2020 at 2am my beloved husband, Larry, went to be with Jesus. I was with him in the room when he took his last breath. He put up a valiant battle against lung cancer for 4 1/2 years. Our family is thankful for Dr. Markus and his team who kept Larry going far longer than expected. We were able to go to dinner December 21 to celebrate our 57th wedding anniversary and also to go out the next day to see the lights at the Broadmoor with our son, Erik and his wife, Rena. Erik and our daughter, Heidi, returned to Colorado Springs on Tuesday, December 7, and they were able to spend the evening visiting with Larry in the living room. I believe he was waiting for them to arrive, as on Wednesday he was unable to get out of bed. We will be eternally thankful for the care that was given him by Compassus Hospice. They cared for him as we would have if we could. Larry loved God and was looking forward to being in the presence of Jesus. Maybe he'll be able to do portrait of Him and put plenty of red in it. He used his red pastel down to a nub. Larry was a proud Dad and Grandpa. One of the last activities he participated in with his grandchildren was playing Skee Ball at the Manitou Arcade. What a fun day. I have precious memories of our time together as a married couple. We had fun times with our kids camping and then as senior adults camping with our friends from Woodmen Valley Chapel. We enjoyed going to Sedona every fall for the Sedona Plein Air Festival, watching accomplished artists paint and trying a hand at it ourselves.

Dear Judy and Judy and Larry, I share your grief at Larry's passing. In my high school sophomore year I moved from a small town in Montana to Omaha. I shared homeroom and some classes with Larry, who was friendly and welcoming. When I saw him in the hall he was sometimes friendly and sometimes not. I didn't know about Terry. Larry invited me to his birthday party and then to join his Explorer Boy Scout group where I met his brother, Mike and Ron. Larry's welcoming me into his home and social group was the most important thing that happened to me in high school and created several life-long friendships. Larry was a positive influence in every way. He was an outstanding student and led an upright, Christian life. In memory I cherish time spent with him, his family and friends. Few people have brought so much sunshine into my life.

Larry was my older brother, being born about 7 minutes before I was born. We did almost everything together in our growing up years. We always dressed alike. Most photographs of our childhood show us together in identical outfits. We started to try to be our own individual selves during our teenage years. We followed different paths after high school. Over the years we would get together with our families. Our last phone conversation was five days before Larry passed away. We knew the end was coming. Larry stated at that time that he knew he was going to be in a better place. If I can get this to work, I will post a picture from September 1941 on our first day of school. I believe Terry is on the left and Larry is on the right.

In early 1998 I asked Larry out to a Japanese restaurant for lunch. I was nervous. We hadn't had many conversations before and when we did get together, Larry didn't do a lot of talking. I didn't know what was going to happen this time. I had a ring in a little red box and I pulled it out and showed it to him. I asked him if it was OK if I gave it to his daughter. He smiled and said "Why sure, I'd like it if you married Heidi." He welcomed me warmly into his family and several months later walked his daughter down the aisle and let me marry her. Larry really liked holding our kids, his grandkids. When I look through our pictures of him, many of them are him holding my son Alex or daughter Hannah. This is a picture of him with our daughter Hannah in early 2003.

I'm Larry's cousin, Gayle, and it was with sadness that I learned about Larry. As I told Judy, his sister, it is so strange to think of a world without Larry in it. Our families were very close; his mom Mildred was my dad's sister. I have so many fond memories of all of us meeting up. And especially those talent shows. The same ol' skits and gags and we laughed and laughed. Mildred would laugh the hardest. Remember when Larry made the dead chicken out of a dish towel? I just about lost it. We were a silly bunch. I'm the "youngster" of the cousins, but I remember well and I treasure our family reunions. My love to Judy and family.

I am Larry's sister. We were never that close, because I am 6 years younger. After I graduated from college, we at least could communicate on an adult level. I was kind of a brat, and teased my brothers until they retaliated, and then they were teasing me!! When Larry wanted me to visit him in Colorado Springs last week, I was thrilled to go. He said, "Love on me and talk to me." We shared so much about our parents and our upbringing, learning 2 sides of the story! Thank you, Larry for being a Christian example to me, for loving me and sharing so much with me. I went out the door singing, "Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine. Oh what a foretaste of glory divine!" And then I got to sing it to you over the phone while you struggled with every breath. You are a special brother. Love you! Sister Judy
