Obituary of Donald "Don" Schauss

Donald "Don" Schauss was born March 2, 1937 in Wadesville, Indiana to Jacob P. Schauss and Carrie (Schweigert) Schauss. He passed away May 22, 2020 at home. Don served in the United States Army and while stationed at Ft. Carson he met his beloved wife, Janice. He stayed in Colorado and was employed by the City of Colorado Springs for thirty years where he worked doing construction for the City's Water Department. After retiring Donald and Janice spent their days traveling throughout the United States, including Alaska and spent some time in Canada. Although retired, Donald was always a worker. He spent twenty years of his retirement farming in Kansas for friends. Don was an avid hunter and fisherman. He ensured he pass his legacy down to his grandchildren by teaching them everything he knew about animals, guns, fishing and farming each summer. Some of the fondest family memories were made at "the farm" in Kansas. Memories ranging from fishing in the stocked pond, cutting fish hooks out of places like the leg of someone who got in the way of a great cast, pretending not to know who broke windows out of a shed, shooing a beloved deer out of the garden who then repaid Don by kicking his youngest grandson shortly after, and so on. After years of farming, Donald and Janice moved back to Colorado where he spent his days in his green tractor helping neighbors mow their fields in the summer and plow their snow in the winter. He considered any day he could spend in his tractor a good day. Don was a real man. He could build anything, fix anything, show you anything you needed to be shown. Anyone who knew him well knows that Don could do it and do it better than anyone else. He was deemed indestructible and will forever be missed by those who knew him best.He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob P. Schauss and Carrie (Schweigert) Schauss; brother Earl "Bud" Schauss; two sisters, Wilma King and Helen Floyd; and one great-grandson.Donald is survived by his wife, Janice (Fullner) Schauss; three daughters, Joyce (John) Underwood, Debra Kohl, and Donna Ferritto. Donald was the proud grandfather to eight beautiful grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Larry (Martha) Schauss; two sisters, Mary Jessee and Carol Ipock; sister-in-law and wife of his late brother, Bud, Betty Schauss; and many nieces and nephews.
