Obituary of Sonja Mauch Arnold
Sonja Mauch Arnold passed away Monday evening, June 22, 2020 at the age of 83. Sonja was born on May 2, 1937 in Adrian, Minnesota to Raymond and Gladys Mauch. She grew up in Sibley, Iowa and was a graduate of Sibley High School. She attended St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. Sonja, always loving an adventure, took off for Colorado Springs in the fall of 1959 with two college classmates to begin their teaching careers, with her teaching first grade at Lincoln Elementary. However, her teaching career was short lived as in 1960 she married Steve Arnold, an instructor at the Air Force Academy, thus beginning a new career as an Air Force wife. In 1964, Sonja and Steve left the Air Force and with their two-year old daughter and moved into the first home built in their new development, Woodmoor. Sonja played a prominent role over the years in the development of the Woodmoor community, as she was an important presence at all the major functions. She turned the first spade of dirt for the ground-breaking ceremony of Lake Woodmoor, she hosted the dedication of the Woodmoor Country Club by the Governor of Colorado, John Love, and she led the Woodmoor Ladies Club. Most importantly, she was a wonderful mother, raising her two children, Melinda and Greg. In later years, Sonja was active in her church, St. Peter, and offered her amazing teaching skills tutoring kids in reading. One of Sonja's biggest joys in life was spending time with her two grandsons. Times with "Grammy" are such cherished memories. She is preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Sandra Mauch Clay. Sonja is survived by her daughter, Melinda (Michael) Thompson; son, Stephen Gregory Arnold; grandsons, Ryan Burkholder and Tristin (Carissa) Arnold. She had a peaceful heart, full of love for her family and was remembered for her kindness and caring personality. Memorial Mass, 10:00AM, Thursday, July 23, 2020, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 55 Jefferson Street, Monument, Colorado 80132.
