Obituary of Col Michael Thomas Scott, U.S. Air Force,

Colonel Michael Thomas Scott, USAF, (Ret.), 75, died September 3, 2020 Colorado Springs, Colorado.He was born March 29, 1945 in Raleigh, North Carolina.Michael was from Greenfield, Indiana. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1967, which began his twenty-eight year career. He was a member of the United States Air Force Academy Association of Graduates, Dadaelians - a fraternity of Military Aviators.He married Lorraine Blakely in 1967 and together they navigated a career and family. He completed pilot training at Reese AFB and then was stationed at Langley AFB where he flew C-130 Hercules. During the Vietnam war, Michael was stationed at Ubon AFB, Thailand, where he flew AC-130 gunships. He was awarded a Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and Distinguished Flying Cross. He earned an M.B.A. from Indiana University in 1975. From there he was stationed at Wright Patterson AFB from 1976-1979. Afterward he attended Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1980 he was stationed at Little Rock AFB, where he was a squadron commander. In 1986, he was on the staff of The Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.Michael attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Fort McNair, Virginia. In 1989, Michael was stationed at Mildenhall AFB, England, where he flew KC-135 refuelers and was the Wing DO and later the Vice Wing Commander. His last assignment was at Travis AFB followed by retirement from the U.S. Air Force in 1995 when Mike and Lorraine moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Michael's first love was always flying. He was an avid runner and was on the USAFA track team, and ran one marathon to prove he could. He enjoyed cars, especially his BMW roadster. He brewed beer, took up fly fishing, and made beautiful pieces through woodworking. Mike and Lorraine enjoyed hiking, biking, and traveling. Mike loved his family and dogs. He had a dry, witty sense of humor. He was intelligent, dignified, and courageous. A sense of adventure and service were with him throughout his life. Michael lived with Parkinson's plus Progressive Supranuclear Palsy for nearly seven years. He passed away on September 3, 2020, with his family by his side.He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Lorraine (Blakely) Scott; daughter, Carol (Scott) Powell, husband, Robert Powell, grandchildren, Lindsay Powell, Andrew Powell; daughter, Joan (Scott) Little, husband, Edward Little, grandchildren, Riley Little, Owen Little, Caroline Little; daughter, Linda (Scott) Tangenberg, husband, Scott Tangenberg, grandchildren, Kara Tangenberg, Lauren Tangenberg, Jacob Tangenberg; brother, David Scott; and nephew, Eric Scott.Due to COVID restrictions, a private Graveside Service will be held, 10:00AM, Friday, October 9, 2020.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Michael's memory made out to the Air Force Academy Foundation, (afacademyfoundation.org) or to Suncrest Hospice, Colorado Springs,(http://suncrestcolorado.com/location/suncrest-hospice-colorado-springs/)would be meaningful and appreciated.The family respectfully requests no flowers.
