Obituary of Elizabeth "Betty" J. Day

Betty Day - Highlights of a LifetimeElizabeth Jobyna Moran was born in 1927 in Pueblo, Colorado and grew up with her brother, Dick, and sister, Pat, graduating from Central High School in 1945. She sang in the junior and senior choirs, wrote poetry and edited her high school paper. She married Douglas Calvin Day in Pueblo in 1948. Their son, Larry, was born in 1948, and Ken in 1950.Doug and Betty moved to a new home in Colorado Springs in 1954. While there, Betty belonged to a contest club, wrote many contest entries and won a refrigerator, stereo, sports equipment, and even a week in Paris! She was also a big fan of the Metropolitan Opera on the radio during Saturday afternoons. In 1963, they built a custom home on Templeton Gap Road. For two of their years there, they boarded two llamas, Navoso and Black Beauty. The llamas even escaped one day and merited a newspaper article when recaptured!Larry married JoAnne in 1981 and in the late 80's two granddaughters, Brielle and Kelsea, brought new joys and precipitated many trips to see them growing up.In 1982, Del, a 16-year-old student from the Philippines lived with Betty as part of the Youth for Understanding program. When he graduated from Palmer High School, she hosted a Christmas party for him and his friends. Betty's Christmas dcor always included a special tree stand, Simpich figurines and candle lights outdoors. There was always baking of Christmas goodies to share.Doug and Betty joined Bethel in 1986 and immediately dived into the church community. Greeting newcomers and supporting youth were always important. She also sang in the church choir, the Soli Deo Gloria community choir and wrote notes to members undergoing a hardship. After Doug passed away in 1998, Betty sold their home and moved to the Medallion Retirement Community. She joined the Medallion writing club. She took her earlier poems on paper and recorded them on her computer. Her granddaughters added photos and memorialized her poetry collection in a hard cover book for her to have and share. Her granddaughters' weddings followed in 2015 and 2017, and then Betty's first great-grandchild, Frankie, was born and in 2020 two more great-grandchildren, Calvin and Elizabeth, arrived. Betty passed away peacefully in her apartment surrounded by the photos of the expanded family she so lovingly mothered.Memorial Service, 2:00PM, Friday, September 18, 2020, Bethel Lutheran Church, 4925 Farmingdale Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80917.Inurnment, Bethel Lutheran Church Columbarium, 4925 Farmingdale Drive, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80917.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Betty's memory may be made to the Abode Hospice Foundation (abodehospiceandhomehealth.com), Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation (www.pikespeakhospice.org), or Bethel Lutheran Church (www.bethellutheran.net) Events Memorial Service Friday, September 18, 2020 2:00PM Bethel Lutheran Church 4925 Farmingdale Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80917 Email: office@bethellutheran.net Phone: 719-570-9800 Final Resting Place Bethel Lutheran Church Columbarium 4925 Farmingdale Drive Colorado Springs, CO 80917
