Obituary of Elsie "Dorcas" Kuns

Elsie "Dorcas" Kuns, age 98, of Colorado Springs, Colorado passed away at home with her family September 15, 2020 at 12:23pm. Dorcas was born November 21, 1921 at home on the Donhowe farm 6 1/2 miles east of Renwick and 10 miles north of Goldfield, Iowa. Her parents, Orlin L. Donhowe and Mildred Hemness were born and raised in Story City, Iowa. At 9 years old, Dorcas and her family moved to Logansport, Indiana, where she graduated from Logansport High School in 1939. She had two younger brothers, Orlin L. Donhowe, Jr., known as "Lynn", deceased July 15, 2020, and James H. Donhowe, known as Jim, deceased September 14, 2010.Dorcas was married June 4, 1941 to Keith Edwin Kuns of Flora, Indiana who preceded her in death December 7, 2001. In Logansport, they raised 5 children, Karen Lee (Robert) Hann of Colorado Springs, Melbourne L. Kuns of Colorado Springs, Shari Kay (Robert) Brian of Colorado Springs, Don Russell Kuns (deceased in 1970), and Linda Ann (Gregory) Snell of Westby, Montana. Dorcas has 10 grandchildren, Shariane (Tony) Ramirez, John (Jane) Hann, Bobbiane (David) Alumbaugh, Kristiane (Shawn) Allbrandt, Matthew (Stephanie) Price, Christopher (Cindy) Price, Jennifer (Jimmy) Labit, Gustav Snell, Olav (Joanna) Snell, and Einar Snell. She also has 24 great-grandchildren, and 2 3/4 great-great-grandchildren (baby due in November).After high school, Dorcas worked in a factory helping her family financially as needed. From 1954 through the early 60's she had a day care in her home to help her family financially. In 1966 she and her husband, Keith, moved to Manitou Springs, Colorado and later bought a cabin off Crystal Park Road. She joined First Lutheran Church in 1968. She brushed up on secretarial skills and worked several temporary jobs until she was hired by the Post Office in Colorado Springs. In 1980 Dorcas had the opportunity to transfer to Hawaii with the Post Office. She and her husband lived in Honolulu 5 years, when she was promoted to Postmaster in Hana, a small town on the island of Maui. They lived in Hana for another 5 years before retiring and moving back to their cabin in Manitou Springs. Dorcas and her husband Keith liked to dance to the big bands especially in Chicago, Illinois at the Arigon and Trianon ballrooms. They were also very active in square dance clubs in Colorado. In 2011, Dorcas left her cabin and moved in with her daughter, Karen, in Colorado Springs, where she lived the rest of her life. She loved to party with her family and friends. She remained active in First Lutheran, Rebekah Circle, Postmaster Breakfasts, and Sons of Norway. She loved to shop and enjoyed many shopping trips to the mall.She will be missed by all of us. We love you, Mom!Memorial contributions in Dorcas's memory may be made to the Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation. The family wishes to extend our gratitude to Pikes Peak Hospice who were outstanding this past year helping us with Mom. With their help we were able to keep Mom at home for which we are forever grateful. A private burial will be held at Crystal Valley Cemetery in Manitou Springs, Colorado.
