I was lucky enough to meet Dr. Gershen last February at an event hosted by a mutual friend. I explained that I was applying to medical school and he said, "I used to run of those, you know," and gave me his business card. He immediately became a mentor and source of guidance for me through a long, stressful process. I followed his advice and was able to secure a spot in medical school next year. I was accepted the day he passed. Dr. Gershen only met me briefly but immediately took me under his wing with no pretense. He gave me straight, useful advice and I am forever grateful for that.

I had the privilege of leading a trip to Israel in 2015 and Jay was one of the participants. He was warm and congenial, and passionate about his work. There is a bonding on intimate trips like these that produce life long friendships. I was lucky to have Jay as a friend. Thomas Lockshin

My heart breaks to hear of Jay's passing. I truly appreciated his wisdom, calm and logical perspective and caring heart. We will no longer be able to experience the personal warmth of his smile and the pure acceptance of his eyes, but the impact he has had on the lives he has directly and indirectly touched will last for generations to come. Thank you Jay for being SO amazing, for helping so many others discover their wings and helping them fly. YOU WILL BE MISSED!

Pledged with Jay at UB. I remember when we competed in a inter-fraternity sing competition. We sang this Yiddish song. Jay was leader. He had this deep voice which was amazing. He was funny and made the event a lot of fun. Sorry I didn't get to know him better in life. Sounds like he lived an amazing life and left a lasting mark on all he knew, and Society in general. He will be sorely missed.

Carol and Family: There are no words express my admiration for Dr. Gershen. I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Gershen will be in the hearts of many of us. I am one of them. As a NEOMED faculty and also Chaired the University Faculty Council, I had to interact with Dr. Gershen on many occasions, regular meetings, frequent calls and discussions. He was passionate for others. He was caring and listened to all!!. I remember couple of weeks before Dr. Gershen left NEOMED, we went out to dinner together in Kent, Ohio!!.We had a wonderful discussion; his wisdom and advice went so far. I remember him saying to me, "call me Jay!! Fayez you are a good man!!, have faith always and success will come to you then you go after it." He also shared his best book on leadership and life. We kept in contact and my last text message from Dr. Gershen was on father's day (June 21, 2020 @ 2:57PM) saying "Thanks Fayez! And HappyFathers Day to you too! All the best. Jay" I will miss you and remember you always Dr. Gerhsen You Rocked!!..Fayez Safadi!!
