Obituary of Mary "Eleanor" Pickett

Mary "Eleanor" Brown Pickett peacefully and quietly left us on November 17, 2020.�Born in Greenfield, Massachusetts, August 15, 1924, she had reached her 96th birthday just months ago.Eleanor grew up with her father, Forrest, a forty-two year career Navy sailor, and mother, Anna, a former teacher. She was their oldest daughter with an older brother, Forrest, Jr., and younger twin siblings, Christine and George. She often spoke of a portion of her childhood spent on the islands of American Somoa. After graduating from Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego in 1941, she eagerly headed to Greenfield for nursing school. Her time there provided a hands-on training at Franklin County Hospital as well as times working in Boston hospitals.Eleanor returned to San Diego to begin her career as an Operating Room Nurse. In the summer of 1947, she married Theodore R. Pickett, Jr., another military man. Staying in San Diego while Ted was in Korea, she was able to help her younger sister begin college.When they were reunited the years of building a family, supporting his further schooling and military career began. Moving from the West Coast to the East Coast with stops at posts in the heartland they were a family of five when the Army sent them to France, where the family was finished with their fourth child. After several more moves Eleanor settled her family into Tempe, Arizona in the 1960's. Always busy supporting the family in their activities kept her busy. After she became an empty nester she found several volunteer opportunities in her community. From the local hospital's recovery room, historical museum, city committees conserving the original city cemetery and church committees at the First Congregational Church.After Ted's passing in 1999 she chose to split her time between Arizona and visiting with her children in cooler climates in the summer months, driving long distances which shocked her circle of friends. She was adventurous, fearless and focused in making sure she was a present force in the lives of her eight grandchildren. In 2013�she chose to relocate to Colorado Springs full-time, enabling� her to be much closer to all of her children. She was blessed with great-grandchildren in her final decade with a total of seven over that time.Eleanor is survived by her four children, Theodore R. Pickett, III (Joanne), Mary Williams, Christine Pickett, and Forrest Pickett (Donna);�her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Bronwyn Williams (Timothy Russell and children, Mairwen and Raziell), Gwynne Cox (Daniel), Will Pickett (Kate and sons, Brendan and Colin), Tom Williams, Sean Pickett (Kim and daughters, Emory, Reece and Wren), David Williams, Derek Pickett and Jason Pickett.Eleanor will be joining her husband, Ted, at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, Denver, Colorado 80235.�Due to current COVID restrictions no date has been set for this ceremony.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Eleanor's memory may be made to military charities or a charity of your choice.
