Don and I talked some on Facebook Messenger. He was not only a cousin, but a very good friend. He sure loved God, Family and the USA. I remember after our Uncle Eugene Saylor passed away, Don was asked to do the prayer at the Saylor Family Reunion in Indiana. He was very reverent, kind and respectful. A leader in every aspect. I will miss his wisdom and gentleness. Till we meet again Don....we will be along shortly.

I was saddened to learn of Don's passing. We worked together at NORTHCOM and I appreciated his expertise and dedication. He was the architect and driving force behind our annual DSCA workshop, a major undertaking that undoubtedly improved the skills and coordination of those responsible for managing major disasters and other incidents.

I worked with Don on the annual DSCA workshop and other EPLO initiatives. He was a man of great character and highly intelligent. He always had time to listen and advise to ensure that everyone's equities were considered. He loved his family and spoke of them often. He was a good friend and I will miss him. God's blessings on your family during this most difficult time.

I worked with Don through his teaching online for the Bachelor of Science in Fore Administration at BGSU. Although I never got to meet him in person, we developed a friendship. He taught a class called the Psychology of Disaster which was, in my opinion, the most important class in the curriculum. He literally changed students' lives by sharing his experiences and giving them the skills to cope with the pressures of the job. Each semester he agreed to teach, I felt grateful to work with him again and happy that another group of students were fortunate to have him as their teacher. Deepest condolences for such a tremendous loss.

As his sister and only one at that, the news of his passing hit me hard. I will not forget that night when Victoria called me. I stayed up late for no reason. I kept telling myself that I needed to get to bed because I wanted to go to church in the morning. I knew what had happened before she told me because her name came up on my phone and she normally doesn't call me at 3:00 in the morning. I never cried so hard. Getting over his death will take me awhile, but I will never get completely over it. It stings my heart. Don was a natural born leader and always saw what we must do in a crisis. I learned a lot by his example on how to deal with my parents divorce. When our dad left, he didn't just leave our mother, but he left all of us. We stayed together as a family and went on with our lives. We were poor, made many memories and very happy. This is just one of many stories about our brother, Don. We love him and he is sorely missed.

Baby...you are my entire world and I just know if you could have done so, you would have come home to me and Zelda. Nothing in life could have prepared me for your loss, but the love you showed me, (too much at times...in your own words!), will eventually show me the way. I am so very lucky to have had so many years with you and will make you proud until the wonderful moment I am able to join you and our loved ones. Always....Victoria

In all of my academic journey, I never had the pleasure to meet such a wonderful man. His broad experience and eloquent way of presenting such a wide array of topics. The last email I received from him spoke of his desire to make a tour through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where I live. Carmen and family, please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Don was a true professional to the Defense Support of Civilian Authorities (DSCA) community. His leadership, and commitment to the mission, was observed by all. I "salute you my friend," and look forward to buying you a beer during our next DSCA workshop in a world more exquisite than the one you left way too soon.

Don was one of the best listener's when we were discussing issues. He always worked to keep an "even keel" within the DSCA community and our workshop committee. He and I visited multiple time when seeing his kids and grandkids in Atlanta. He was truly dedicated to family and country. Don will be missed by all and there will never be another one like him. Rest in Peace Don. Bill Hirner, LtCol, USAF (Ret)
