Susan Duell Martin posted a condolence
Wednesday, September 8, 2021
September, 2021 Dear Kathy, This is Susan Duell (Martin). I remember you well from our high school days. If I remember right we were fellow Altruettes together! I have thought of you and your family with fondness from time to time over the last 50+(!) years. I hope that you are doing well. From what I could gather from the Sunnyvale Class of '67 website, you live in California and worked in Special Education. I hope that you are continuing to find joy and contentment in your life, despite the challenge we all face in today's world. Late yesterday, I learned of your sister Sandie's passing. My husband, Bill Martin, and I were deeply saddened to hear this news. We want to convey our deepest condolences to your and your family. I want to share with you some of my best memories of Sandie. Sandie and I were best friends in high school. We shared many adventures together. We attended a conference or two at Asilomar. She ran for President of the California Conference of Student Council one time, and I gave her nominating speech. She won! I was recently cleaning out some old things, and found a photo of her that we used at Asilomar. I sent it to her! I am hoping that you came across it in her things. Her beauty really comes through in that photo! We took great field trips to San Francisco with our Humanities class, including one trip in which we went to see the movie My Fair Lady! If you remember Jean Lambroughton, she was a hoot on that trip, imitating the look and voice of Eliza Doolittle. We both had the some boyfriend--Scott Ewbank-- for awhile--me first and then Sandie. I think Sandie and Scott may have still been together when we graduated. I remember that she, I, and another friend Becky, had our ears pierced by your mother at her medical office. It was the summer before we all went to college. It was not common then. We were way ahead of the curve! Sandie went to Stanford, of course, and I went to UC Berkeley after high school. I do not think I would have gone to college except for the role models of my friends, especially Sandie. Neither of my parents went to college and they never discussed it with me. I was on my own, but luckily I had great friends like Sandie. The spring break of our sophomore years, Bill, Sandie, Steve (her first husband), and I drove together to Guaymas (a beach town in Mexico) in Steve's Chevy Corvair. We slept on the beach, wrote and sang songs together, went through Death Valley on the way home, and got caught in a snowstorm near Bishop. We were all still teenagers! We had a blast! Sandie and I began to grow apart. I think that she went straight through and graduated, but Bill and I became college dropouts for a while, as well as hippies. We moved to Santa Cruz and eventually graduated from UCSC, after we had two children. We did see Sandy and Steve in the late 1970s when we lived in Boulder, Colorado for the year that Bill went to grad school there. We didn't stay in touch. In the last three or four years, however, we renewed our friendship though email exchanges. (Ahh-the wonders of modern technology!) We found that despite the intervening years, we had much in common. I had been an elementary teacher for 18 years, and she had taught in early childhood. We were both retired college professors. My work was in literacy teaching and teacher education and hers was in psychology. I spent the bulk of my professor career at Boise State University. We both loved hiking, camping, the outdoors, nature, and birds. We exchanged names of wonderful books that we were reading--particularly those focused on nature. We also both loved writing. Her genre of choice for writing was poetry. I love her poetry! It seemed so her to be a poet. She would occasionally send me poems via email. I am so happy now to have her book of poetry that she sent to me! We talked about Bill and I coming to Colorado for a visit some time in the future. Last December we were involved a new house that was much more a fixer-upper than we were expecting. With all that work, Covid, and everything else going on, I noticed I hadn't heard from Sandie for awhile. But I was too busy to think about it much. It was only a month or so ago, that I finally thought of it again, and send her an email. I got no response. But again, a busy time, and regretfully I didn't follow up right away. Yesterday, as we were watching the San Francisco Giants playing the Rockies in Denver, I though about following up contacting Sandie. Bill and I talked about going to see a game in Denver in late September, and then going to see both Sandie and his cousin who also lives in Colorado Springs. I checked the Internet and unfortunately saw the shocking news. What a sad loss for me, as well as others. Now I'll never have the opportunity to once again connect with Sandie in person. I am so happy, however, for wonderful life memories and for the exchanges in the last few years. So again, we are sorry for your loss of a dear family member. I hope that sharing these memories offers you a chance to reminisce and keep in sight the wonderfulness of Sandie and her rich life. Please give our best to family members and share this letter if you want. One last thought, Kathy. My brother-in-law George Martin was in your class as well. He and Bill were very close. He passed away almost exactly one year before Sandie from lung cancer. In fact, I had emailed Sandie to let her know to let you know in case he had been a friend/acquaintance of yours in high school or through the SHS group. When I was trying to retrieve information on how to get in touch with you, George's high school picture kept coming up in several sites right next to yours! Very interesting! (McNew-Martin??]. Because of Covid, we have not had a Celebration of Life for George yet. We will finally have one on October 23rd. I think it will be outside, and we're all vaccinated now. If you are at all interested in attending please let me know. I would love to see you and talk about old and new times. I expect some of your former classmates will be there. Take care. All my best to you and your family. Warmly and with deepest sympathy, Susan Duell Martin September, 2021 Dear Kathy, This is Susan Duell (Martin). I remember you well from our high school days.
