I served in the U.S. Air Force Academy Drum & Bugle Corps for four years which was a part of the USAFA Band Squadron. We were priveleged to know Bill as a member of our Squadron and knew him as our Drum Major. He was the right man for that job and led the Academy Band during with pride and a regal bearing. We would have him lead us as we formed up together for the noon-formations to march the cadets to their noon meals, graduation parades for the cadet wing and even a few parades as a combined group. Bill stood tall and you could tell that he took great pride as he carried his baton and wore his sash as he led us during those occassions. He was a great guy and gave great support to the Drum & Bugle Corps guys. He will always be in my memories of my years there as someone who really stood out. Thanks Bill!

It was my honor and privilege to know and serve under CMSgt. Stokes. In 1970 I was a 21 year old and married horn player and proud member of the USAFA (NCO) Drum and Bugle Corps attached to the premier USAFA Band squadron. As the combined unit Drum Major, Bill impressed me right away. His military bearing and Air Force professionalism followed him both in and out of uniform. As NCOIC of the Drum and Bugle Corps he expected the same from all ranks. CMSgt. Stokes guided the Corps through a tough transition period where our unit was disbanded in 1973. At our last reunion Bill was our guest of honor. I think he was pleased and proud to see that we all landed on our feet and continued with life after drum corps. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Respectfully, Bill Carlson Colorado Springs

We lost a rare and special person with Chief Stokes. One of the AF Academy 'originals' who joined at the superintendent's quarters when we gathered that group in the early 1990s -- he often led discussions and reminiscences of the first Academy years. His wit, humor and kindness drew people to him all his years. Farewell, Chief, your many friends and fans miss you.

Bill and I go back to my time as an AFA cadet ('65-'69). He was the force behind the Cadet Band, which I led as a senior. We kept in touch through the intervening years. Of all the officers and senior NCOs who positively impacted my AF career, Bill ranks among the top - he was a professional in every sense of the word, and a role model for all who knew - or served under - him. I have lost a friend. If the family does not already have a bugler in place for Bill's inurnment at the Academy cemetery, I would be honored to play Taps as a final farewell. So sorry to learn of Bill's passing. I had the privilege of serving in the University of Maryland Band under the baton of Bill as drum major. The honor of having Bill teach me to follow in his footsteps as drum major at the U of MD when he graduated will continue to be remembered. Bill was the perfect individual to serve the Air Force Academy for many years. Rest in peace, Friend.
