Obituary of Shirley Jean Baker

It is a great privilege to write these words to express the sadness all of us share over the loss of such a wonderful person. Shirley was a proud and dignified woman who had a passion for life. Shirley passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 24, 2021, at her home in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She had a wonderful vibrant soul with a wonderful sense of humor which endeared her to everyone she came in contact with and it is a great testament to her nature that she formed so many long lasting friendships over the course of her life. Shirley, we all thank you for everything you've given us, and the warmth we shared during your precious time on earth. She thrived, though, in her own way, always keeping busy, never feeling sorry for herself, and always excited to see her loved ones, as well as her friends, her doctors, etc. Shirley was a popular lady and despite enjoying time alone, would welcome company as if it a natural extension of her new, quieter life. Right up until she became less able to get around and her health was a hindrance, she was full of joy and always eager to help out, no matter what the problem was. Her laugh was infectious! She was born on September 29, 1946, in Houston, Harris County, Texas to Herbert Eugene Shults and Georgia Mae (Craig). Shirley was a loving wife, homemaker, and a talented cook and baker. She had a great creative edge in her cooking and baked goods. With her husband, Michael, of forty-six years, they raised their two daughters, Linette and Michelle, and were instrumental in caring for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Both were very keen and encouraging their family in good manners and more importantly encouraging them in their education. For many years Shirley owned and operated a commercial janitorial and home cleaning business and also had a catering business. Shirley and her husband, Michael, had a strong love for their community and a commitment to volunteering to the less fortunate. Shirley even organized cooking lesson at her local food pantry.Shirley is preceded in death by her loving husband, Michael R. Baker (1946-2018) of forty six years; her parents; and sisters, Linda and Joy. She is survived by her daughters, Linette R. (Jerry) Corley-Dixon, and Shirley M. (Darrell) Baker-Merryman; six grandchildren, Richele (Leon) Cousins, Ronnie N. (Trishia) Nelson, Michael (Autumn) Nelson, Christopher Nelson, Brian (Aurea) Windsor and Logan Baker; nine great-grandchildren; and a large extended family of sisters-in-law and brothers-in law, and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all!
