Obituary of Lawrence "Larry" George Schaefer, U.S. Army,
Larry was a well-known character in his old Colorado City neighborhood. He was well loved in the community, "the kindest, funniest man I know." Larry died in an automobile/pedestrian accident near his home on December 16, 2021. After he retired from the Army, Larry worked parking lot maintenance for the City of Colorado Springs for decades. He was the Sergeant at Arms for Chapter 1075 of the Viet Nam Veterans of America. Larry was a very active member who consistently served faithfully. Larry was also an active docent at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, where he spent much of his time. He enjoyed playing the doctor in the TB exhibit, explaining the history and treatment of tuberculosis, and its role in Colorado Springs history. He was a resolute advocate for several causes, including expanding public transportation in Colorado Springs, and the homeless. Larry was a member of the City of Colorado Springs Transportation Citizens Advisory Board as well as on the Transit Passenger Advisory Committee (TPAC). Larry was born in Boulder, Colorado and spent much of his childhood at the family cabin near Rollinsville, Colorado. He is survived by his three children, Sergio Schaefer, Marlo Schaefer, and Brandy Gonzales; his mother, Anne; and sister, Terry; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Viet Nam Veterans of America, Chapter #1075, PO Box 38974, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80937.
