Obituary of Dr. Floyd J. Miller
Dr. Floyd Miller passed away from complications with pneumonia on Sunday, January 2, 2022 when he was 86 years old. He was born at home in 1935 to conservative Mennonite parents Jacob and Fannie Miller who farmed near Uniontown, Ohio. His growing years were spent working on the farm with thirteen brothers and sisters and getting into mischief as farm boys were wont to do. Floyd also worked on his oldest brother's vegetable farm and at Kidron Electric as a plumber and electrician. As a young child he fractured his arm, and after seeing his x-ray he felt the call to become a doctor in order to alleviate suffering and bring people healing. He broke the mold of his family and community in order to achieve that dream.Floyd married Edy Beachy in 1956 and had three children while completing college at Kent State. He then moved his family to Iowa to attend the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1966 at the top of his class. After completing a surgical residency and internship, Floyd moved his family to Colorado Springs in 1967 to start his medical practice. Over the next twenty-two years he built and ran a private practice in family medicine, performed surgeries at local hospitals, and delivered hundreds of babies. He earned an Executive MBA from CU Boulder while in family practice. Floyd also served as Chief of Staff at Eisenhower Hospital, President of the Board of Hesston College, and volunteer physician for Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp. He served on the boards of many different charities and non-profits. Floyd built a medical office complex on Academy Boulevard and led a partnership of general practice doctors before "retiring" in 1989. The years after leaving private practice he taught at the Osteopathic Foundation clinic in downtown Colorado Springs. He also traveled to serve as a short-term chief physician at rural hospitals in eastern Colorado and Homer, Alaska. Floyd and Edy loved to travel the world, visiting all fifty US states, India, Russia, South America, Nepal, Europe, and many other places. With his young family and a camper trailer he explored much of the United States, even driving to Alaska over 1,400 miles of dirt roads. He was always looking beyond the immediate horizon for an adventure he heard calling from afar. Floyd was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing and big game hunting with his family and dear friends. He was a member of Beth-El Mennonite Church for fifty-five years and devoutly followed Jesus. Floyd served in many leadership positions at Beth-El, where he and Edy made a large impact with their philanthropy and dedicated support. His wife, Edy passed away in 2016 after sixty years of marriage. Floyd's love for, and service to, his family and this community leaves an indelible mark on many lives.Preceding him in death are wife, Edy; parents, Jacob and Fannie Miller; siblings, Bill, Dorothy and Alta Miller, and Marie Thomas, Catherine Hartzler, and Grace Gingerich.Floyd leaves behind three children, Anthony (Jen Anderson) Miller, Reyna (JR) Keller, Bryan (Jodi Derstine) Miller; six grandchildren, Indigo (Connor Tyrrell) Miller, Seth Miller, Sterling (Rob) Oakley, Richard Keller, Hayden Keller, Jorden Keller; and two great- grandchildren, Elanor and Marqus Oakley.
