Obituary of Sibyl Lois Walters

Sibyl Lois Walters died peacefully on May 3, 2022 with family by her side in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was 90 years old.She was born in White River, South Dakota in 1932 to Ralph Stickel and Laura (Monson) Stickel, the youngest of three children.Sybil is preceded in death by her siblings, Delilah and Maynard; her parents; husband, Robert Walters; and her sons, David and Paul.She will be long remembered for her persistence and fighting spirit. Alzheimer's took away much of who she was the last two years, leaving her unable to communicate the love she had for her dearest friends and family. She maintained a fighting spirit until the very end.In the 50s, she married, had three children, Douglas, David, and Paul, and eventually moved to Colorado Springs. She had grit and made the then unpopular choice to leave an abusive husband and raised the three boys on her own, holding down at least two jobs at a time. She remarried in 1970 to Robert H. Walters, and they moved to Wyoming, where Sibyl owned a restaurant and eventually became mayor of the small town of Glenrock. She was a very active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church there. She finished her life of work by retiring from the IRS in 1994. She moved back to Colorado Springs in 2015 after Robert passed. She was well-known for her knitting abilities; intricate and complicated sweaters, afghans, baby blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, and prayer shawls. Many people are lucky recipients of Sibyl's talent.Sibyl is survived by a son; Douglas Alan Swanson (Debbie); two grandchildren, Lee Alan Swanson and Lindsey Elyssa Swanson (Joe Fornero); a step-granddaughter, Jessica Leighila Lubs (Solomon); four great-grandchildren; and two unborn great-grandchildren.Memorial Service, 10:00AM, May 18, 2022, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 7400 Tudor Road, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80919.The family requests no presents or flowers and asks well-wishers to instead consider a gift to the church in memory of Sibyl.
