Obituary of Ilse Gertrude Hoggenmiller

Ilse Hoggenmiller, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, went to be with our Lord and Savior on October 17, 2022. Ilse passed peacefully at St. Francis Medical Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, following a brief illness. Born in the small farming village of Grunz kreis Pasewalk, located northeast of Berlin in Germany, Ilse survived World War II as a young girl and experienced all the hardships of a horrific war. For many of those years, her father was a prisoner of war in England and Wales, so her mother and her three sisters had to work the farm and fields alone. They often went without necessities, and she told stories of not having access to salt or sugar for years. Ilse attended school in Grunz until she was sixteen, then sought work as a house servant in a manor house in Augsburg at the encouragement of an aunt who desired a better life for her. She also worked as a housekeeper and baker in a Berlin bakery, whose owners lived upstairs. These opportunities taught her to perfect her cooking and baking, which served her well as a professional caterer later in her life. A few months shy of her twentieth birthday, Ilse came to America by boat in search of a better life for herself. She settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her oldest sister, Edith Wolf and her brother-in-law, Gerhard Wolf. She worked in a bakery and as a housekeeper for a few different families. Her social life blossomed when Ilse eventually met her husband Herman at a German-American dinner club where they both enjoyed dancing. They married in 1958 and raised their three children in a row home in the Mayfair section of northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a dedicated wife and mother, and took great pride in her home and family. Her work experience made Ilse an excellent cook and baker, and she started her own catering business from home as the children entered their teens. Hobbies she enjoyed regularly included gardening, growing flowers, knitting, crocheting, sewing, travelling, and caring for her children. She was always generous with her time and skills, and all of her neighbors loved her. Upon retiring in 1991, the Hoggenmillers wanted to leave Philadelphia, and moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado to be near her sister, Edith and her brother-in-law, Gerhard. Anyone who knew her, knew that Ilse was always a hard worker, always found joy in life, loved her family and friends, and was a devoted Christian that loved singing hymns and reading the Bible. Her life was a good, long life, but certainly not without its struggles, including surviving wartime, developing breast cancer twice, diabetes, and ten years of dementia. She was a long-time member of the New Apostolic Church in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania and in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is survived by her children, Eric (Ann) Hoggenmiller, Edith (Gary) Snyder, and Diane (Robert) Schiller; her grandchildren, Cheryl (Richard) Turner, Robert Schiller, and Kiersten Schiller; her two great-grandsons, Conway Turner, and Drake Turner; and several nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of fifty-seven years, Herman Hoggenmiller; and her parents, Walter and Emilie (Trestor) Topel. Ilse will be forever in the hearts of all that had the good fortune of knowing her. May she rest peacefully in angels' arms for eternity.
